Lake Vyrnwy International Sculpture Symposium, North Wales, UK

In March 2002 I was fortunate to meet Andy Hancock while carving at a small country fair in Central Victoria, Australia. A chainsaw sculptor and coordinator of the Lake Vyrnwy Sculpture Symposium Andy invited me to participate and I landed in the UK the following August. The Symposium has been run annually for 10 years now with the resulting artworks incorporating a wonderfully diverse sculpture trail at the foot of the historical Lake Vyrnwy Dam. The sculptures have been created during the Symposium by carvers from across the globe and are often of monumental scale. In addition … the sculpture trail has trebled visitor numbers to the area and greatly benefited the economy of the local community. It was a huge honor to have been invited to be involved in this ground breaking event … and I look forward to future events of similar calibre. My piece "Lady of the Lake" or "Water is Life" was intended to be a fun reminder of the importance of fresh clean water to our very existance. Locally she is fondly known as the 'Big Blue Mermaid' … I don't mind.
